Finding a transaction

Search, filter, and sort your Transactions list to find a specific charge. Open it to see its description, memo, attachments, and full history.

About

Your Transactions list holds everything from every connected account, which is a lot to scroll through when you're looking for one charge. Search, filters, sort, and the date range all narrow the list, and they stack, so you can go from thousands of transactions to the handful you actually want in a few clicks.

Every transaction also opens up, showing you the raw bank description, a private memo field, anywhere you've attached a receipt, and a log of everything that's happened to it.

1. Search by name

Type into Search transactions at the top left of the list.

Search matches the payee name and the transaction description — the raw text your bank sent — so if you can't find a business under the name you know it by, try what appears on your statement.

Tip: Search narrows whatever is already on screen. If you're not finding something you expect, check whether a filter or date range is still applied.

2. Narrow the date range

Click All times to limit the list to a period.

The presets down the left cover most needs: Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, Last 90 days, Last 365 days, and the to-date options: Week to date, Month to date, Quarter to date, Year to date.

For anything else, click a start date and an end date on the calendars, then click Apply.

3. Sort your list

Click Sort to change the order.

Option

Puts at the top

Newest date

Most recent transactions (the default)

Oldest date

Your earliest transactions

High amount

Largest money in

Low amount

Largest money out

High absolute amount

Biggest transactions either direction

Low absolute amount

Smallest transactions either direction

High amount and Low amount treat money out as negative, so a large expense sorts to the bottom of High amount. When you want the biggest transactions regardless of direction — the usual case when hunting for one large charge — use High absolute amount.

4. Filter

Click Filters for everything else. Filters stack with search and the date range.

Filter

What it does

Sort by

Same options as the Sort button, repeated here for convenience

Category

Show only a category, or hide it. Pick Include or Exclude first, then choose the category

Merchant

Same, for a specific merchant

Money Direction

Both, In (money you received) or Out (money you spent)

Amount

A $ Min and $ Max range

New vendors & categories

Only transactions from vendors or categories that are new to your account

Split transactions

Only transactions you've split across categories

Starred transactions

Only transactions you've starred

Including attachments

Only transactions that have a file attached

Excluding attachments

Only transactions with no attachment

Click Apply to run the filter, or Reset all to clear everything and start again. Apply stays greyed out until you've changed something.

Tip: Excluding attachments plus a $ Min amount is a quick way to find larger expenses missing a receipt.

5. Star a transaction to come back to it

Every transaction has a star at the left of its row, just after the checkbox. Click it ① to mark the transaction; click it again to unstar. A starred transaction shows a filled star ②.

Starring doesn't change anything about the transaction or your reports. It's a bookmark. Once you've starred a few, turn on Starred transactions in Filters to see only those, which makes it a good way to park anything you want to ask your accountant about, or come back to at month end.

Open a transaction

Click a transaction to expand it.

  • Transaction description: the raw text from your bank, exactly as it arrived. This is usually how to identify a charge whose payee name means nothing to you.

  • Memo: a private note, up to 300 characters. It's for you: Margins doesn't read it and it doesn't affect your categorization or reports.

  • Attachments: click Add attachment to keep a receipt or invoice with the transaction.

See what happened to a transaction

Click Transaction history inside an open transaction to see everything that's happened to it, newest first.

Each entry shows what happened, when, and who did it — you, System, or the Finaloop AI Agent that categorized it. It's the fastest way to answer "why is this categorized like that?" or "did I already change this?"

Note: Times in this panel are shown in UTC, not your local time zone.
