Connect Margins to Your AI Stack

Ask your store's financial data anything, in plain English. This guide gets our MCP connected in under 2 minutes.

About

Connect Margins to your favorite chat like Claude or ChatGPT with the Margins MCP and ask anything about your sales, margins, cash, expenses, and inventory the same way you'd ask a teammate.

Once you're connected, you can:

  • Ask questions about your financial data and get a plain-English answer.

  • Build custom workflows into and out of Margins, like a weekly cash flow summary posted to Slack, your numbers feeding a forecast, or anything else your tools can do.

  • View your data in pre-built dashboards, like your ROAS and ad spend, contribution margins per SKU, vendor spend analysis, and more.

1. Connect Margins to Claude

Claude.ai (web)

  1. Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner, then click Settings.

  2. In the settings sidebar, under Customize, click Connectors. Or open claude.ai/customize/connectors directly.

  3. Click Add then Browse connectors to open Claude's connector directory.

  4. Search for Margins, then click the + next to the Margins connector.

  5. Sign in using the same email and password you use for the Margins app.

  6. Click Allow to give Claude access to your Margins data.

  7. Open any chat in Claude and start asking questions about your financials.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan? An owner first adds the connector under Organization settings > Connectors; members then enable it under Customize > Connectors.

  4. Click the + next to the Margins connector.

  5. A sign-in window will open. Use the same email and password you use for the Margins app, then click Allow.

  6. Start a new chat and ask your first question.

Claude Code

How to connect

Claude Code is the command-line version of Claude, used mostly by developers. If you're not sure, use the Claude.ai tab instead.

  1. In your terminal, run:

claude mcp add --transport http margins https://mcp.finaloop.com

  2. Sign in with your Margins account when the browser opens.

  3. Type /mcp inside Claude Code to confirm the connection.

Recommended: let Claude look things up without asking every time

Once connected, open Customize > Connectors > Margins and find Tool permissions. Set the Read-only tools group to Always allow. One setting covers Claude everywhere - web, desktop, and mobile. Claude Code is the exception: it asks in the terminal instead, so choose the don't-ask-again option there for the read tools.

These are the tools that only look things up - your sales, margins, cash, expenses, inventory, and the searches behind them. Allowing them once means Claude answers your questions straight away instead of pausing for approval on every step. If you see any tool that creates, updates, or sends something, leave it set to ask every time.

2. Connect Margins to ChatGPT

You can connect Margins to ChatGPT on paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise). Availability depends on your plan and workspace settings, so if you don't see the option below, custom MCP servers may not be enabled on your account yet.

  1. Click the Settings icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

  2. Open Apps (on some accounts Apps & Connectors) > Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode. On some accounts the toggle is under Security and login.

  3. Back in Apps, click Create to add a new app.

  4. Enter the following details:

    1. Name – A recognizable name for your server (e.g., My Margins MCP)

    2. Description - Optional brief detail of what the server does.

    3. MCP Server URL – copy and paste this URL:

      https://mcp.finaloop.com
    4. Authentication – Select OAuth

  5. If ChatGPT shows Scan Tools, click it, complete authentication if prompted, and wait for the scan to finish before clicking Create.

  6. Check the box indicating you want to continue and click Create.

  7. Note: ChatGPT shows this standard warning for every custom MCP server - it appears for any connector you add this way and isn't specific to Margins.
Follow the authentication flow and grant ChatGPT permission to access Margins.

  8. Open any chat in ChatGPT and start asking questions about your financials. If you don't see Margins, open the + menu in the message composer, choose Developer mode, and enable your Margins app.

3. Your first question

Once connected, paste either of these into any chat. The first one confirms the connection works; the second gives you a tour of what you can ask:

"List the available Margins datasets and provide an overview of what I can learn and analyze using the MCP. Include a few example questions I can ask."

4. Troubleshooting

Sign-in error? Make sure you're signing in with the email linked to your active Margins account. You can check at margins.finaloop.com. Still stuck? Email [email protected].

Connection not working? Remove the Margins connector in settings, add it again, and restart the app. Still stuck? Email [email protected].

How do I disconnect? Remove the Margins connector in your AI app's settings. To fully revoke access, email [email protected].
